Description

Frida Kahlo Documents (Two) Signed Twice and engrossed in her hand declaring that actress Paulette Goddard had purchased Kahlo's painting Still Life. Both documents are tariff documents entitled "Declaration in Connection with Paintings, Etc., and Sculptures" and dated "Mexico Dec. 19th 1941." Each declares that the painting, bought for $300, was "Carried by Miss Paulette Goddard by plane Port of entry: Brownsville, Texas." One document, marked "Original," bears the signature of Vice Consul Marc L. Severe and a $1 fee stamp. The other document is marked "Quadruplicate," but also contains two Kahlo signatures, along with other engrossed information. Both documents contain folds and bear a Consular Service stamp in the lower left corner.

In 1941, actress Paulette Goddard was the wife of Charlie Chaplin, but was likely the mistress of Kahlo's husband, artist Diego Rivera. Still, Kahlo and Goddard had developed a friendship by the time Kahlo painted The Flower Basket for Goddard, which the actress purchased in 1941.
