Eugène Delacroix. Autograph Letter Signed."E. Delacroix." Four page bifolium in French, 5.25" x 8", Paris; June 23, 1856. In this letter addressed to "Princess," Delacroix writes that he is back in Paris after a short absence and found her letter. Appreciates her invitation for them to meet but he is engaged in ongoing work and cannot leave beyond a certain distance from Paris, and for more than a few days at a time. Had to make modifications to his "big project" and this will require extensive time and energy. He wants to make the most of the clement weather to make progress. As far as the young man she mentioned in her letter who intends to come and study painting in Paris, Delacroix says that so long as an artistically-minded individual with skill (which, he writes, is essential) catrain and or receive an education anywhere so long as they work hard. All he can provide is advice to the young man, since his nature imposes a total solitude in the studio. He sometimes hires people to help him with hefty projects but they must be already familiar with his work methods. Asks 'Princess' to tell Liszt how pleased he would have been to shake his hand.
During his artistic life, Delacroix was in part characterized by a constant need for music. He was a great admirer of Chopin and Lizt, whom he mentions in this letter.
Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic School.
Condition: The letter has the usual folds; otherwise good.
