Monet writes to French novelist, Lucien Descaves, regarding an upcoming visitClaude Monet Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 9" x 7" (sight), in French, Giverny [Eure, France], July 6, 1914. Writing to friend and author, Lucien Descaves, regarding a visit, in full and in translation: "It's agreed for Thursday morning. You are to catch the 8:32 train at St. Guyner par Vernon, where you will find my car. I am working very hard at the moment, but I take a rest from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You are not bothering me at all and I will be delighted to see you and Mrs. Descaves. I have written to [Gustave] Geffroy, and I hope he is not in ill health. In all friendship and see you Thursday. [signed] Claude Monet." Monet (1840-1926) moved with his family to Giverny in 1883 where he enjoyed continued artistic and commercial success for the rest of his life. Folds, else fine. Matted with a picture of Monet in his later years and framed to an overall size of 26.25" x 18".
Lucien Descaves (1861-1949) was a novelist and founding member of the Académie Goncourt, a French literary society founded in opposition to Académie française, and a frequent visitor to Monet's house at Giverny. Gustave Geffroy (1855-1926) was an author and art critic, also a founding member of Académie Goncourt, and an early admirer of Monet and his work. He was one of the first historians of the Impressionist movement.
