Description

Claude Monet Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 8.25" x 6.75" (sight), in French, "Giverny par Vernon [France],"January 15, 1890, to Dr. Georges de Bellio regarding his health, in part and in translation: "I am recovered without at the same time feeling my normal self. My appetite has been slow in returning and I feel a pain in my back (between the shoulders) and like a sensation of cold . . . Your second prescription has done me much good but I have not had the desire to go back to work and I would not be surprised if you do not know me when you see me without my peasant costume which is my habitual attire when I come to Paris." Smoothed folds. The letter is framed to a size of 9.25" x 8". This small frame is then attached on a hinge (allowing the viewer to see both sides of the letter) to a larger frame with a matted translation and print of Monet's The Poppy Field near Argenteuil to an overall size of 18" x 31".

Georges de Bellio (1828-1894) was a Romanian aristocrat and homeopathic doctor to many well-known impressionist painters of the day, including Monet, Pierre-August Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Édouard Manet, and Camille Pissarro. He had an extensive collection of impressionist paintings which were donated to the Musée Marmottan Monet in 1957.
