[Richard Blythe]. Two Aviation Engravings by William Heaslip. The first, in black and white, measures 15" x 7.25" (sight). Titled "Bail Out," it shows a pilot jumping out of an airplane that has caught fire. Directly below the picture is the following inscription: "To Richard Blythe - who has had every thrill - This etching is his last thrill - come by & see it sometime - from his friend William Heaslip." 18.25" x 11.75" overall. Binding remnant at the top edge. The second, also in black and white, measures 15" x 12" (sight). Titled "Magic Carpet," it shows a backlit passenger plane flying at night with the beam of a searchlight emanating from the ground. Below the picture the artist has signed his name. 18.25" x 15" overall.William John Heaslip (1898-1970) was a Canadian artist who apprenticed with a lithographer in his native Ontario at a young age. During the First World War, he served in the Royal Flying Corps. He moved to New York City after the war and studied at the Art Students League of New York. During the early 1940s, he made posters for Coca-Cola which featured aircraft of the United States Army Air Corps that are now housed in the Smithsonian Institute's Air and Space Museum. Richard "Dick" Blythe was a Canadian pilot and one of the owners of the public relations firm Bruno and Blythe which represented Lindbergh during his transatlantic journey. He also co-founded the secretive, male aviator club, The Quiet Birdmen. From the Richard Blythe Aviation Collection.
