[Revolutionary War] Artist Winthrop Chandler Autograph Document Signed Twice. "Winthrop Chandler". One page, 6" x 3", dated December 25, 1773, payment by Dr. [John] Green, with the usual fold creases, trivial closed tears along the right edge and with a small stain on the verso at the lower right corner, else fine condition. Chandler signs within the text on the recto listing services rendered, and again on the verso acknowledging receipt of payment.

Winthrop Chandler (1747-1790) may well be one of the most important painters of the Revolutionary War period. Best known for his portraits of family and friends, his paintings are rather stark and somber with great attention to detail. Portraits alone could not sustain his family so when commissions were scarce he supplemented his income by painting houses or working as a gilder. This document clearly comes from one of the lean times in Chandler's career as it is a receipt for painting a clock case, panels, pickle jars, and gilding some frames. Sadly, Chandler's life was plagued with financial woes and family health problems. His dire circumstances are reflected in the fact that just eight weeks before he died, he deeded all his remaining property to the Selectmen of the town of Thompson, Connecticut, in return for which they were to care for him in his last illness and pay for the expense of his funeral.
