    Description

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, Letter Signed, "Wellington." Two pages (of a bifolium), Frenida [?] [Portugal?]; December 24, 1811. A letter, written in a secretarial hand, addressed to a General Le Bernewitz, President of a General Court-Martial, and reads, in part:

"I have the honor of receiving your letter of the 21 & I have perused the Proceedings of the General Court-Martial of which you are President.... I am inclined to attend to the recommendation of a General Court-Martial in every instance. But I have never perused stronger evidence of murder than has appeared before the General Court-Martial.... Neither the provocation given by the deceased, nor his bad character and quarrelsome disposition, are any palliation of the premeditated intention to put him to death with which Henry Frederick went and executed that intention about 5 hours after the deceased had injured him."

Letter is accompanied by a typed transcription.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds, with slight weakness at the crease; otherwise good.
