Arthur Lee Autograph Letter Signed Three Times to French Naturalist Michel Adanson. Two pages, 7.25" x 8.75", London, Nov. 18, 1765. With an ALS by Adanson on the integral sheet. Separation at integral fold, with some tearing and paper loss (no loss to text) where the seal was opened.

    More Information:

Written in Latin, Lee expresses his dedication to the study of natural history and his admiration for teachers of this subject, among whom he places Adanson as one of the foremost. Lee notes his plans to return to Virginia, and hopes they can continue to share their interest in natural history. With an ALS likely by the recipient, Adanson, on the integral sheet addressed to Lee. Although untranslated, appears to have content regarding plant species.

Lee had originally dedicated himself to the study of medicine. Shortly after writing this letter, Lee would begin studying law which would lead to his involvement in the colonial politics. Lee later served with Benjamin Franklin and Silas Deane as the American Commissioners in the Court of France in hopes of garnering support for the American Revolution. Great content and association providing insight into Lee's early aspirations.
