Arthur Conan Doyle Autograph Letter Signed "A Conan Doyle, MD." One page, 4.5" x 7", Southsea [England], October 31, 1889. Writing to an unknown recipient, the author, best known today for his character Sherlock Holmes, discusses one of his lesser known novels, in part: "I should be glad of a couple of 'Peoples' every week (beginning with the last week Oct 27th), as long as my story 'The Firm of Girdlestone' is running." The Firm was serialized in The People: A Newspaper for All Classes beginning on October 27, 1889, and running weekly through April 13, 1890. Earlier in the year, Doyle published his second Holmes novel, The Sign of the Four (later titled The Sign of Four), in Lippincott's Magazine. Detachment along the horizontal fold is repaired on the verso. Minor paper loss at the right edge and areas of chipping at the left.Of note is the addition of "M.D." at the end of his signature, the first instance that we have seen. In June 1882, Doyle, a physician by trade, moved to Southsea and established an unsuccessful medical practice. In 1915, the novel The Firm of Girdlestone was made into a silent film.
