Architect Cass Gilbert Autograph Letter With George Custer Content Signed "Cass Gilbert". One page, 8.5" x 11", on Gilbert & Taylor letterhead, St. Paul, Minnesota, June 11, 1888, to a Miss Endicott. A fascinating letter in which Cass Gilbert, the architect who designed Woolworth Building and the Supreme Court Building, presents Endicott with a document signed by Custer and Lt. William Cooke of the 7th Cavalry. Gilbert details how he acquired the signed document: "It was given to me by a man named Palmer...who was an enlisted man in the 7th Cavalry after the 'Battle of the Little Big Horn', and who as company clerk came into possession of a number of papers that were found among the effects of the soldiers killed in that engagement, which were considered valueless or which were not claimed by relatives or friends...it came into my hands in the summer of 1878 about two years after the battle...Lieutenant Cooke who's [sic] name appears on the paper along with Genl Custer's was a famous Indian fighter and nicknamed by the Indians 'Long Beard'...he was killed fighting by Custer's side...". Gilbert also includes a personal memory of Custer in the letter: "I distinctly remember Custer and Cooke bring in St. Paul with the regiment just before it started on the expedition. The former was a man of medium height and slender wiry frame with long blond mustache and hair. The latter of a tall handsome figure with black hair and long black beard. Both were of striking appearance." Fine condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.Shipping, Taxes, Terms and Bidding
