Apollo 11 Crew-Signed "Insurance-Type" Moon Landing Cover with Recovery Ship Mementoes. A philatelic cover, 6.5" x 3.625", with a "Mail Early in the Day" single "Apollo 8" 6¢ stamp (Scott #1371) affixed, machine canceled at Houston, Texas, on July 20, 1969, the day Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The color cachet features the text: "NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club/ Official Commemorative Cover/ First Manned Lunar Exploration" above a colorful moon scene. It is boldly signed to the right in blue felt tip: "Neil Armstrong", "Michael Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin". It is neatly addressed at lower right to J. L. Day. This cover is identical in appearance to a Type One Insurance cover save for the address, but has no astronaut provenance. Excellent.

Jack Day, a member of the Space Technology Hall of Fame, was a biomedical engineer and was aboard the U.S.S. Hornet as part of the NASA medical team when the Apollo 11 astronauts were recovered. Also included in this lot are two of his souvenirs from this exciting venture.
Hornet Recovery Postcard: A color photo postcard of the "U.S.S. Hornet CVS-12" with the U.S. Navy Recovery Force Pacific rubber-stamp cachet, cancelled on the splashdown date of July 24, 1969, aboard the ship. He has written in the message area:"This was the big one." No one could argue with that. Very fine.
Line Crossing Certificate: A great item. A printed 8.5" x 11" certificate, filled in by typewriter, being a "Subpoena and Summons Extraordinary. The Trusty Shellbacks Versus J. L. Day, Civilian Guest, USS Hornet". It is dated July 15, 1969, and mentions that Day was a civilian guest aboard the Hornet for the Apollo 11 Recovery mission. These are an age-old tradition; they are given on the recipient's first trip across the equator. "Signed" by both Davey Jones and Neptunus Rex. Very fine.
