    Description

Apollo 11 Crew-Signed "First Man on the Moon" First Day Cover with 1970-Dated White House Letter of Transmittal. A philatelic cover featuring an attractive Artcraft cachet with a single stamp (Scott #C76) tied to the cover with the dual Washington DC/ Moon Landing U S A "First Day of Issue" cancellation. Surrounding the cancellation are the ink signatures of the Apollo 11 crew: "Neil Armstrong", "M Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin". Authentic crew-signed Apollo 11 First Day Covers are quite scarce and desirable. Excellent.

Included with the lot is a typed letter dated April 9, 1970, on White House stationery, from the secretary to General James D. Hughes stating, in part: "General Hughes is out of the office today, but when I talked with him he asked me to forward the enclosed envelopes which have been signed by the crew of Apollo 11. They just arrived back here in our office today." Hughes, a highly-decorated Air Force general, was military assistant to President Richard M. Nixon at this time. He had also served as military aide to Nixon when he was vice president. Also included is a vintage newspaper article regarding his nomination for promotion to three stars (which he did receive).
