Apollo 11 Color Photo Crew-Signed on Mat, Inscribed to Lead Flight Director Clifford Charlesworth, Directly from the Lousma Family Collection. A 9.5" x 7" color white spacesuit crew photo mounted to a 12" x 10.5" matboard. Beneath the photo Armstrong has written a long inscription: "To Cliff Charlesworth - With our/ Sincere Appreciation for Your Friendship/ and Your Professional Performance as our 'Flight'/ Neil Armstrong/ Apollo 11-". It is also signed by: "Michael Collins" and "Buzz Aldrin". Charlesworth was the lead flight director for the historic Apollo 11 moon-landing mission. An amazing item that belonged to a very key member of that flight team. Very fine condition with generalized light fading to the photo and the signatures, likely from hanging on a wall for many years, still very clear.

Gene Kranz, in his book Failure Is Not an Option (New York: Simon & Schuster, 2000), discusses how Clifford Charlesworth handled the flight director assignments for Apollo 11: "...When I became Flight Control division chief, I saw no reason to shuffle the lead responsibilities, so Charlesworth retained the lead flight director role for Apollo 11. One of Cliff's initial tasks was assigning the flight directors for the mission phases... I hoped that when Charlesworth put the pieces together, he would give me the assignment for the landing phase of the mission. The meeting where that happened was almost anticlimactic. Cliff walked into my office, stood at the window, stared out for a moment, and then turned with a smile on his face. He knew that I wanted to get down to business, but he just toyed with me for a few moments, passing the time of day, then abruptly said, 'I think it's time to decide on the Apollo 11 phase assignments.' With no further preliminaries, he continued, 'I think I should launch Apollo 11 and do the EVA. Milt [Windler] will take the entry. This leaves Glynn for the lunar ascent.. . and you with the landing. Is that okay with you?' I nodded, and the meeting was over... I had drawn the flight director assignment to put the first man on the moon." (page 257).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
