    Description

Apollo 1 Crew-Signed Color NASA Photo with Period Provenance. A 10" x 8" litho print with the caption "Apollo Crew/ Astronauts Edward H. White II, Virgil I. Grissom, and Roger B. Chaffee/ Prime Crew for NASA's First Manned Apollo Flight". It pictures the astronauts posed in their flight suits at a table behind a model of the original CM-012 command module. It is boldly signed by each in black felt tip: "Ed White", "Gus Grissom", and "Rog Chaffee" (a less common version of Chaffee's signature). Originally designated AS-204, the first mission in the Apollo manned lunar landing program was scheduled for launch on February 21, 1967. A tragic fire during a "plugs-out" launch simulation on January 27, 1967, claimed the lives of the three astronauts aboard. Accompanying the photo is a memo note dated September 29 [1966] to "Donald & Ray" from "Maile Oshita" saying "Gemini/ autographs by my boss/ Gus Grissom + 2 of my/ other astro boys./ They'll fly Apollo 1/ on December 5, 1966". Oshita was a NASA employee in the Apollo Spacecraft Program Office (photocopy of NASA Roundup from 1965 included). Some minor creasing at upper right, otherwise very fine.
