Description

Antonio López de Santa Anna Ornate Engraved Mortgage Bond Signed "A.L. de Sta. Anna". $500 Bond, No. 786, 17" x 12.75" (sight), printed by Nathan Lane, New York, June 28, 1866. Engravings depict three of Santa Anna's properties which he was mortgaging. Upon his exile in 1855 to the United States, Santa Anna suffered financial difficulties. He was swindled out of most of his fortune by persons who claimed to have influence with the State Department, and could help him return to Mexico. Virtually broke, he resorted to issuing mortgage bonds like this one on his properties to raise capital. Upon the death of Benito Juárez in 1872 Santa Anna was finally permitted to return home to Mexico, where he died almost penniless and ignored in 1876.

Elegantly triple matted alongside a small engraving of Santa Anna and framed to an overall size of 26.25" x 25.5". An impressive presentation and ideal for display.
