    Description

Antonio López de Santa Anna Mortgage Bond Signed "A.L. de Sta. Anna". $500 Bond, No. 1115, 18.75" x 13.5", printed by Nathan Lane, New York, June 28, 1866. Engravings depict three of Santa Anna's properties which he was mortgaging. Upon his exile in 1855 to the United States, Santa Anna suffered financial difficulties. He was swindled out of most of his fortune by persons who claimed to have influence with the State Department, and could help him return to Mexico. Virtually broke, he resorted to issuing mortgage bonds like this one on his properties to raise capital. Santa Anna was finally permitted to return home to Mexico upon the death of Benito Juárez in 1872. He would die almost penniless and ignored in 1876.

Condition: Light soiling, and some showthrough from purple stamp on verso.
