Anson Jones Document Signed. One partially-printed page, 9.25" x 11.25", Washington [on-the-Brazos], August 12, 1845. Jones was serving in his last few months as the final president of the Republic of Texas when he signed this document certifying that "John H. Seward was on the 23d day of July A.D. 1845, duly elected to the office of Justice of the Peace, in and for Precinct No. 3, in the County of Washington." Countersigned by Ebenezer Allen as Texas secretary of state. Jones' large signature and paraph are bold. Smoothed folds. The entire document is lightly mat burned. Spots of staining at the right and left edges. Folds are weakened and beginning to separate at the edges. Small tear (approximately 1" in length) found at the upper right edge. Adhesive remnant at the lower right corner with mounting remnants found on the verso. With a 4.5" x 5.75" engraved portrait of Jones, titled "The Architect of Annexation."

It is possible that the John H. Seward mentioned in this document is John Hoblett Seward (1822-1892), the son of a prominent Independence, Texas, landowner, Samuel Seward (1794-1870), who settled in Washington County in 1833. The younger Seward followed in his father's footsteps, establishing himself as a lucrative plantation owner and slaveholder with interest in the family's mercantile store located in nearby Independence.
