    Description

Annie Oakley: Signed Photograph. Annie Oakley and Frank Butler were the club shooting pros and resident celebrities for several seasons at the Carolina Hotel, a posh winter resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina. To entertain its guests, the Carolina staged occasional masquerade balls. This unusual and whimsical photograph shows Annie as an "Indian princess" at a Valentine's ball in February 1919. She fashioned the gown and decorated it (and herself) with pheasant feathers, trophies of her frequent bird-hunting outings. Maybe it was just a measure of her popularity, but she won the evening's prize for best costume. This non-typical portrait was not intended for publicity, and Annie signed and dated it boldly in ink for a friend or relative. On the back she wrote, in pencil, "Pinehurst 1919."
