Andrew Johnson Military Appointment Signed as president and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton ("E. M. Stanton") only twenty-three days after the death of Abraham Lincoln. One partially-printed vellum page, 13.75" x 17.5", "City of Washington", May 8, 1865, conferring on Chauncey B. Reese "the rank of Major by Brevet . . . for gallant and distinguished services during the campaign through Georgia, and ending in the capture of Savannah." Reese was commissioned into the U.S. Army Engineer Corps in 1859. He survived the Civil War, marching with General Sherman through Georgia and South Carolina, and died in 1870. This document is well-preserved, with the minor exception of small holes along the lower central vertical fold (repairs on verso). With a bold signature by the president, vivid military vignettes, and a large blue seal in the left margin.
