Andrew Johnson Letter Signed to President James Buchanan. One page (of a bifolium), 7.75" x 9.75"; Nashville, Tennessee; March 8, 1857. A letter from Johnson as Governor of Tennessee, to President James Buchanan recommending Robert H. Hill of Tennessee to a position in land office of the Northwest Territories: "-Robt. H. Hill, Esq., will be an applicant for an appointment to some one of the offices in our Northwestern Territory. Mr. Hill is a trust-worthy gentleman, of excellent business habits and well qualified for such a position as he desires. He is an earnest, active and efficient Democrat, and his appointment by your administration would be gratifying to a large circle of Democratic friends in Tennessee... Andrew Johnson."Democrat Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) was serving as governor of Tennessee when he wrote this letter to James Buchanan (1791-1868) who had been inaugurated as the fifteenth president of the United States four days before. Like many Democratic governors and politicians in 1857, Johnson looked to President Buchanan to appoint friends and fellow politicians from their home states to patronage positions. It is not known if President Buchanan appointed Robert H. Hill to the position requested through Johnson. Ex. R. Douglas Stuart.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
