Description

Andrew Johnson: 1865 Letter, Signed as President to Gideon Welles. 1-page partly-printed document, Washington, D.C., July 28, 1865, on "Executive Mansion" letterhead, sent to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles and signed by "Andrew Johnson" as President. 7.75" x 9.75" bifolium stationery with blank integral leaf. Using language reminiscent of that used by President Lincoln when forwarding requests to Cabinet members, Johnson asks that Welles provide copies of military orders for publication in the "Army and Navy Journal" if "consistent with the public service." Johnson would later have a run-in with Secretary of War Stanton, leading to his impeachment, but he seems to have had a good working relationship with Welles. A fine example of Johnson's autograph, written just three months into his Presidency.
