Description

Andrew Jackson Autograph Endorsement Signed "A. Jackson" as president. One page, 8" x 9.75", [n.p.], January 16, 1831, granting executive clemency to Alfred Knight. Jackson writes in full:

"Mr. Hunter enclosing the petition of Alfred Knigh [sic] & recommending him to executive clemency. Let the ballance of the punishment by imprisonment, with the fine be remitted, and the prisoner liberated, without payment of costs as it appears he is entirely insolvent & a foreigner."

President Jackson's endorsement occurs on the fourth integral page of a William Hunter Autograph Letter Signed (Washington, January 6, 1831) asking for Knight's pardon. His letter from the first integral page reads in full:

"Mr. Pearce of Rhode Island has put into my hands the Petition of Alfred Knight praying for his liberation from Jail. I was of Counsel for this unfortunate man, and I can safely assure you that the statements of his Petition are true and that he is totally unable to pay the Fine imposed. I cannot but think his case is such a one as peculiarly recommends itself to the executive clemency. [Signed] William Hunter."

Below Hunter's letter is a Dutee Pearce Autograph Endorsement Signed reading, "I concur with Mr. Hunter as to the poverty of the man and total inability to pay anything." Pearce was a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island.

As president, Jackson pardoned, commuted, or rescinded the convictions of 385 people in addition to Knight (202 of them in his first term). This document is toned with smoothed folds. Jackson's text and signature are bold and large.
