Andrew Jackson Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7.25" x 12", np, May 19, 1813. Addressed to William B. Lewis, who served as quartermaster under Jackson. (Lewis later influenced Jackson to run for political office, including president in 1821, senate in 1823, and president in 1828), issuing a pay order for assembling volunteers in the fall of 1812, headed "The United States to Calloway Hardeen". Jackson writes: "In carrying ...under the order of Gen. Jackson employed by Gen. Roberts for assembling the volunteers in the fall of the year 1812 four days at two dollars per day...also Dr. William Hardeen employed in the same business four days at the same price...Sir you will please discharge the above accounts...". A receipt in the lower margin acknowledges payment of the debt. Appointed major general of U.S. Volunteers by Governor William Blount of Tennessee in 1812, Jackson led 2,070 raw Tennessee recruits to Natchez, Mississippi, only to be ordered by General James Wilkerson to demobilize his force. Rather than dismiss them there, Jackson marched the volunteers back to Tennessee under severe conditions. It was on this return trek that his men nicknamed him first Hickory, for his toughness and later Old Hickory. Following the Creek Indian uprising in which 250 whites were massacred at Fort Mims in what is now Alabama; Major General Jackson led 2,500 Tennessee volunteers against the Creeks in October 1813. At Talladega in November, he defeated a force of 1,000 Indians, killing 300. Age toned, minor stains, mounting remnants on the verso, still entirely clear with all writing dark and legible. A significant Jackson document in his hand. Even toning, and old tape reinforcement around the perimeter on reverse side, else fine.
