Andrew Carnegie Autograph Document Signed. One page, 8" x 10", New York, September 29, 1870, on stationery that reads, "The Union Iron Mills of Pittsburg / New York Office 19 Broad St." Carnegie writes in bold, black ink, "Know all Men by these present that in the investment made in Gilman, Clinton & Springfield Rail Road interprise . . . David McCandless of Pittsburgh Pa is a full & equal partner with me. Each of us owning one half of said interest."

The Gilman, Clinton & Springfield Railroad was built following the Civil War and hosted its first train one year after Carnegie composed this business agreement. The railroad operated in Illinois through 1877, when it was merged into a larger railroad. Carnegie had entered other joint ventures with McCandless, a fellow Scots businessman. Smoothed folds; usual toning.
