American Sculptress Harriet Goodhue Hosmer Pair of Autograph Letters Signed "H. G. Hosmer". Harriet Hosmer was an American sculptress, who took up residence in an American expatriate community in Rome during the middle of the 19th century. There she socialized with George Eliot, George Sand, the Brownings, Thackeray, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, among others. She also became intimately involved with several women, among them American actress Charlotte Saunders Cushman. This lot consists of two ALS, neither dated and presumably both written in Rome. A talented sculptor Hosmer may have been, but her penmanship skills certainly leave something to be desired. The first letter, 4.5" x 6.5", is written to a young woman and reads, in part: "My dear Miss [illegible] I started to come to see you last night but was prevented. I want you to come and dine with me on Friday at 6 ½ & won't take no for an answer. Miss Cushman & her family are coming - a family dinner that's all." The second letter is written to "Lady Burton", presumable Lady Isabel Burton, wife of explorer and author Sir Richard Burton. Again, Hosmer's handwriting makes it a bit difficult to decipher, but it appears that she accepts an invitation from Lady Burton for a dinner engagement. Both letters have been mounted to backing sheets, with some toning and fold creases to the original paper, otherwise the ink remains bright, and the letters are in generally very good condition. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
