Alice In Wonderland Author Charles L. Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, recto / verso, Christ Church, June 28, 1886, to Payne Smith (Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford, later Dean of Canterbury). In part: "Telling has handed to me your letter dated June 23, asking him to send you 24 bottles of Dinner Claret, 36 pints of Dinner Claret, 24 bottles of Dinner Sherry- but I fear it cannot be done. At the C.R. Meeting of Feb. 24 1870, it was ordered 'that the privilege of taking wine out of the Common Room Cellar be limited to Oxford Residents paying £2.2 subscriptions'...even that has been put an end to by a resolution of the Wine the effect that in future no wine at all was to be sent out of Oxford..." Dodgson served as curator at Christ Church at Oxford. Very fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
