    Alexander von Humboldt Autograph Letter Signed, "A V Humboldt." Two pages (of a bifolium) in French, 5.25" x 8", Paris; August 21, 1831. Letter to an unnamed recipient. Untranslated. Envelope signed. "Dr. Humboldt." Envelope, 5.75" x 4.75" mounted on a 6.75" x 5.75" card stock, addressed to the Minister of Prussia; undated. Also, a CDV, 2.25" x 4", of Humboldt as an older man, produced by Matthew Brady's studio, New York, undated, mounted on 7' x 8.5" sheet of paper, a bifolium which includes a clipping from the New York Evening Post, circa 1859, concerning Humboldt's private life, and an engraving of Humboldt, published by Johnson, Wilson & Company, New York, undated.

    Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a Prussian polymath, geographer, naturalist, explorer, and influential proponent of Romantic philosophy and science. His quantitative work on botanical geography laid the foundation for the field of biogeography. Humboldt's advocacy of long-term systematic geophysical measurement laid the foundation for modern geomagnetic and meteorological monitoring.

    Condition: Letter has the usual folds, with pin holes along middle crease, with several holes covered by tape; otherwise good. Envelope and CDV are good.
