Alexander Hamilton Treasury Circular Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.5", Treasury Department; October 6, 1789. A Treasury Department Circular to the Collectors of the Customs. It reads in full: "I have reason to know, that some of the Collectors have conceived themselves authorised to make ye discount allowed by Law for prompt payment, after Bonds were given for securing the Duties. This is not in my opinion, the true construction of the Act. You will therefore under such circumstances avoid making the above discount." Signed, "A Hamilton / Secy of the Treasury." Docketed on verso. Accompanied by an engraving of Hamilton measuring 7" x 9.75".

The act Hamilton is referencing was created " regulate the Collection of the Duties imposed by law on the tonnage of ships or vessels, and on goods, wares and merchandises imported into the United States" (1 Stat. 29-49 [July 31, 1789]). Hamilton had been appointed as Secretary of the Treasury by George Washington just one month earlier.

Condition: The "A" of signature is lightly smudged. 1.25" closed tear to old fold on right edge. .5" closed tear repaired with tape on verso. Engraving is lightly foxed and toned.
