Alexander Hamilton Letter Signed "A Hamilton" as Secretary of the Treasury. One page, 7.25" x 8.75", "Treasury Department" [Philadelphia], September 13, 1792. A circular letter requesting information from an unknown federal official in order to compile a report on expenditures to the Senate: "...By an order of the Senate of the United States, dated 7th of May last, of which a Copy is enclosed [not present], it is requested of the Secretary of the Treasury to lay before them...a statement of the Salaries , fees & emoluments for one year ending the first of Octo[ber] next, to be stated quarterly, of every person holding any civil office or employment under the United States (except the Judges) and of the actual disbursements & expenses in the discharge of their respective offices and employments for the same period..." The information requested was for but one of several reports Hamilton was composing for the Congress, most notably his magnum opus, the Report on Manufactures, which advocated federal support and protection of industry -- helping inflame one of the key sectional controversies between North and South that would continue to the Civil War. Tear at wax seal resulting in paper loss, otherwise excellent. A fine piece of history.
