Alexander H. Stephens: 1865 Autograph Letter Signed. 6.25" x 7.75" ALS, 4pp., Crawfordville, Georgia, December 14, 1865, signed "Alexander H. Stephens", written to Truman Smith, a former U.S. Senator from Connecticut. Written on all four sides of a single sheet folded in half. The former Confederate Vice President comments extensively on the just concluded Civil War and his goals for the future. Superb content. "When I met Mr. Lincoln at Hampton Roads I was exceedingly glad to hear from him that you were well... Our country has passed a fiery ordeal. I exerted my powers to the utmost of their capacity to avert it. When these efforts were unavailing, when the dreadful calamity was upon us, I continued throughout to do all I could to mitigate its horrors and to bring about a peaceful adjustment upon principles of reason and justice at the earliest practical moment... To me at present the prospect of the future is not bright... It is almost as gloomy as it was in the fall of 1860... The change is a great one to the South. It entirely overthrows old institutions. It utterly subverts our ancient social fabric. It brings ruin upon many..." He concludes by mentioning the prospects of elections for U. S. Senators. Excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
