Alexander Fleming Typed Letter Signed with related documents. One page, 5" x 8", on "Inoculation Department/St. Mary's Hospital" letterhead, London, November 8, 1946, to Mr. Everett at the Ministry of Supply. He writes, in full:"I wonder if you could expedite for me an Import Licence for 25 grams of Streptomycin from Messrs. Ayerst McKenna & Harrison of Montreal? This is wanted for a colleague of mine who has an infection which nothing is able to touch. Mr. Gormley has been good enough to find out that Ayerst McKenna & Harrison will donate us this much Streptomycin. No dollars are involved but, as the patient is ill, it is important that the Import Licence should be obtained without delay. Can you do this for me?"
Alexander Fleming's (1881-1955) discovery of penicillin changed the world of modern medicine by introducing the age of useful antibiotics. Streptomycin, an antibiotic drug, was the first used in the treatment of tuberculosis. Toned with rust stain from staple at top left corner; smoothed folds.
Additional documents include the Import Licence issued by the Board of Trade, one page, 7.25" x 10.75", no. 779196, November 11, 1946, for 25 grams of Streptomycin from Canada. With attached sheet naming the applicant as "Sir Alexander Fleming"; a note from H. Bowen to M. Thomas of the Import Licencing Department, marked "Urgent," which reads, in full: "Attached herewith is the letter from Sir Alexander Fleming about which we spoke today. Will you please arrange to have an Import Licence issued as soon as possible as the matter is very urgent? Thank you for your co-operation"; and an empty folder marked "Sir A. Fleming" at the top.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
