    Description

Albert Sidney Johnston Document Signed "A. Sidney Johnston" as the Texas Republic's secretary of war. One page, 8" x 9", Houston, Texas, April 4, 1839, appointing James H. Milroy "a Capt of Cavalry in the first Regiment in the Texian Army." (James Milroy was the uncle of Union General Robert H. Milroy.) At the conclusion of the document, the name of Sam Houston as president has been struck through and replaced with Mirabeau B. Lamar. Toned with repairs along folds; the repairs bleed through causing strips of discoloration.

Albert Sidney Johnston, a veteran of the Texas Revolution, was appointed secretary of war by President Mirabeau Lamar in 1838. As a Confederate general during the Civil War, he was killed at the Battle of Shiloh.
