Albert Schweitzer Autograph Letter Signed "A Schweitzer". One page, 8.5" x 11", France, October 20, 1954. Written in German onionskin paper to Dr. Austin Smith at the Journal of the American Medical Association, in part (translated): "You have the great kindness to take and publish my article entitled 'Medicine in the Jungle' in one of your magazine's editions and I would like to thank you warmly for it. I am therefore ashamed to send it so late. But I couldn' it earlier because as I returned this summer, exhausted from Africa to Europe and got submerged with extremely urgent and important work, I didn't find one single day of rest." Accompanied by an unsigned portrait of Schweitzer.

Schweitzer was a French Protestant clergyman, philosopher, physician, medical missionary, and music scholar. He began to study medicine in 1905, and after qualifying in 1913, set out with his newly married wife to set up a hospital to fight leprosy and sleeping sickness in French Equatorial Africa. He remained there for the rest of his life, apart from fund-raising visits and occasional lectures in Europe. Best known for founding and sustaining the Lambarene Hospital in Gabon, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952.

Condition: Paper is lightly toned at edges, onionskin is fragile and there has been some paper loss at points along edges. Does not affect text, and signature is bold. Portrait of Schweitzer is good.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
