DescriptionAlbert Einstein Typed Letter Signed "A. Einstein." One page, 8.5" x 11", on his personal blind-stamped letterhead, Princeton, New Jersey, June 22, 1944. Addressed to Eric Gutkind (1877-1965), a German Jewish philosopher, Einstein discusses the relationship between the working class and the intelligentsia, in full: "I thank you very much for your kind letter and for your interesting article. I believe you are right in advocating closer collaboration between workers and intellectuals. I fear only that you have put too much emphasis on intellectuals as natural leaders of the whole movement. You will without any doubt be aware of a certain distrust of the working class against the intellectuals which in their bulk have hitherto not been very cooperative towards the working class."
Gutkind immigrated to the United States in 1933 and taught at the New School and College of the City of New York. In 1954 he sent Einstein a copy of his latest book, Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt. In response, Einstein sent an additional letter providing his own views on religion, which differed greatly from Gutkind's.
