"They welcome... the negotiations in Southeast Asia"

Alan Shepard 1973-Dated Typed Letter Signed to a Congressman Regarding Astronauts' Views on the Subject of World Peace. One page, NASA letterhead, 8" x 10.5", February 16, 1973, Houston, Texas, to Honorable Seymour Halpern, signed at close: "Alan Shepard". A response by Shepard as Astronaut Office Chief, on behalf of several unnamed astronauts, to a letter Halpern (R-NY) had written requesting their thoughts on world peace. Full text follows. An interesting letter with a reference to the negotiations in Vietnam; the Paris Peace Accords had been signed just days before the date of this letter. Very fine condition with original mailing folds, light wear and minor stains at the left edge.

"Your thoughtful letter of December 18, 1972, on the subject of world peace has been brought to my attention by the astronauts to whom you wrote. They have asked me to express their views in a single reply.

"They, as do all men of good will, share your concern for the cause of lasting, world-wide peace. They share, however, a reticence in making public their personal expressions on this matter since they feel their expertise is largely in the scientific and technical fields they have spent so much of their careers to master. They welcome the many recent steps taken to reduce the chances of conflict, especially the negotiations in Southeast Asia, but feel that others, much closer to these matters are better prepared to provide the responses you seek.

"They hope you will appreciate their positions, and offer you their warm personal regards."
