General Woll apologizes for money still owed that was borrowed to fund the 1842 invasions into Texas
Adrian Woll Manuscript Letter Signed. One page, 8.5" x 10.75", Headquarters in Guerrero [San Juan Bautista], March 1, 1843. Writing to Lt. Colonel Juan Galan, making apologies for debts still owed him. In part: "In my previous correspondence I neglected to make mention of the money still owed you that you had loaned to the army commissary to administer to the troops when my good friend and predecessor Isidro Reyes was in command. So that you may be at ease on the matter it seems appropriate to tell you that the amount which is owed to you will be satisfied immediately upon arrival of the shipment which should arrive from Zacatecas..." The debts owed to Galan are most likely related to the Mexican invasions of Texas during the previous year, 1842. It was not unusual for the armed forces to sustain themselves by borrowing funds from its officers, setting up an unusual dynamic; not to mention a quick depletion of funds which would often leave soldiers without pay and provisions for long periods of time.In early June 1842, Woll was appointed second in command to Isidro Reyes in the Army of the North as well as head of the Department of Coahuila. That summer he received orders to invade Texas. Woll was instructed to capture San Antonio. Commanding the Second Division, Woll crossed the Rio Grande at Presidio at the end of August and, following a new route, entered San Antonio on September 11. Texan troops repulsed Woll's army in the battle of Salado Creek on the eighteenth. The Mexican army would leave San Antonio two days later, and return to Coahuila. Ironically, the Mexican government declared Woll's Texas campaign a success. Woll was appointed to major general, and awarded the Cross of Honor. In February 1843 Woll became commander of the Army of the North.
Woll adds a postscript at bottom asking the recipient to send his greetings to his compatriot, Manuel Lafuente. A few stray stains and paper loss to to top of conjoined sheet, otherwise very good to near fine.
