Abraham Lincoln Signs a Petition for a Road, a Manuscript Document Signed "A. Lincoln", one page (docketing on verso), 7.5" x 24", Springfield, Illinois, nd. This document is an early petition for a road signed by Abraham Lincoln and other prominent citizens of Sangamon County. It is interesting to note that the petition was presented by William Wallace, Lincoln's brother-in-law; the road runs near the family property southwest of Springfield that was left to Wallace's wife and Lincoln's wife, who were sisters. The petition also bears the signatures of such notables as William H. Herndon and John T. Stuart, who were Lincoln's first and third law partners, respectively. It reads in rather dry legalese: "The undersigned qualified voters of Sangamon County and being in the immediate vicinity of the Road described below would respectfully request that a change be made in the state Road from the City of Springfield to the City of Alton by way of Waverly in the manner following..." It was signed by over fifty people who were in favor of building the road. In very good condition; usual folds are present; each folded section has separated on the fold, except the upper two sections; light overall toning; moderate edge wear. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
