    Description

Abraham Lincoln Signature as president. One page, 3.25" x .75", n. p. [Washington], July 13, 1863. The president signs simply "A. Lincoln." Tipped onto a blank sheet to an overall size of 4.25" x 6.75".

The month of July, 1863, proved to be a turning point in the presidency of Abraham Lincoln and the war that engulfed the nation. The Union Army had failed thus far to make much headway against the Confederacy, due in part to a revolving door of ineffective leaders in the army's top command, but that was about to change. On July 3, word reached Washington that Lee had been defeated near the little town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in what is remembered as the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought in North America. Three days later, on July 7, Ulysses S. Grant captured the key port of Vicksburg. From this point forward, the Federal Army scored victory after victory, forcing the Confederacy to accept defeat less than two years later.
