Abraham Lincoln: Personally Franked 1863 Envelope Used by a Guest at the White House to Send This Letter Home. A.G. Henry, an old Illinois acquaintance of Lincoln, writes a four-page missive home regarding his stay with the Lincolns in Washington. Various references to Mr. & Mrs. Lincoln, and a trip with them to review the Army of the Potomac, then under General Hooker's command, in Virginia. Henry proves naively optimistic: "Genl. Hooker will certainly go to Richmond and on to New Orleans if it is necessary, for he has the finest army the Sun ever shone upon, commanded by a brave & dashing core of Officers." Henry also writes indignantly of one Victor Smith, a Lincoln patronage appointee who had embarrassed the President in an embezzlement scandal: "...besides I wanted to have a fair swing at Victor Smith. I think I will have his head in a basket before I leave tomorrow evening, but you will get the news by telegraph long before I reach you." A delightful letter on Executive Mansion stationary in excellent condition but for several fine partial cuts at fold lines. But of course, the real value is in the signed envelope, which Lincoln (illegally, we might add) franked for his friend in order to save him the postage! Nicely custom framed with a Lincoln portrait carte de visite. The envelope is in fine shape with a clean, bold signature. 19" x 15".
