    Abraham Lincoln: Military Appointment Signed. 14" x 18.75" DS, 1p. Washington, May 18, 1863. Partly printed Document Signed "Abraham Lincoln" as President and "Edwin M. Stanton" as Secretary of War. Appointment of John W. Roder as Brevet Second Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Artillery. Completed in manuscript; the ink has faded. Blue paper seal at top left. Both signatures have adequate contrast. Expertly silked on verso. Roder distinguished himself at the Battle of Boydtown Plank Road on October 27, 1864 and the Battle of Sailors' Creek on April 6, 1865. Some areas of discoloration, as shown, along with restoration to areas of loss on the folds, confined to the upper right quadrant.
