DescriptionAbraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed "Abraham Lincoln". One vellum page, partially printed, 15.5" x 19.5", Washington, June 13, 1862, with handsome engraved military and patriotic vignettes and countersigned by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War, appointing "Thomson [Thompson] P. McElrath . . . First Lieutenant in the Fifth Regiment of Artillery in the service of the United States." With the blue seal of the War Office in the upper left. Smoothed folds with light toning. Lincoln's signature is very bold. Fine.
Thompson P. McElrath was born in 1838. His father, Thomas McElrath, was a partner of congressman and abolitionist Horace Greeley in the "New-York Tribune." He enlisted in the Ninth New York as a second lieutenant and was transferred to the Fifth Regiment of Artillery one month later, where he was later promoted to first lieutenant. In the course of the war, he would receive several battlefield commissions and, in 1868, he was received a captain's commission. After retiring from the service in 1870, he followed in his father's footsteps and became a newspaper man. In 1895, he was to begin work as a war correspondent for a New York paper during the Spanish-American War, but as a consequence of a trolley car accident, he was forced to pass up the opportunity. He died in 1898.
