    Description

Abraham Lincoln. Document Signed "Bowman & Lincoln for plaintiffs", with about 20 additional words in Lincoln's hand. Edgar Co. (Ill.), October 1850, one and a fraction pages, folio. In J.K. Dubois & Co. vs E.Z. Ryan, a suit of ejectment involving some unspecified premises, the parties agree to certain facts, among them that the defendant has had "peaceable uninterrupted adverse possession under his paper title from 1840 to the present time" (Lincoln inserts "and has, during all that time, regularly paid taxes thereon "). It is noted that for four months during 1843 the property was empty, but not abandoned, "the houses having been locked and the keys in the possession of defendant"; the building was temporarily unoccupied because it "was partly a bank or counting house and partly a tavern…[T]he bank had wound up and the building could only be occupied by renters, and during this 4 months no person appeared to rent said property but…as soon as a tenant appeared the bank by its agent gave possession…" On the verso, Lincoln has written, "The foregoing admissions are made for the purpose of the first trial only" and signed. An interesting document showing Lincoln as attorney for his near neighbor and political ally Jesse K. Dubois, who was so ardent a friend that he named one of his three sons for the future President (it was the Dubois sons who pulled the legendary prank of knocking off Lincoln's stovepipe hat by means of a string tied across the sidewalk). From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

Please note: A "Document Signed" means that Abraham Lincoln signed the document in the fom mentioned, but the body of the document is not in his handwriting.
