Abraham Lincoln Blockade Pass Signed "Abraham Lincoln." Two pages of a bifolium, 8.25" x 13.75", "Executive Mansion" Washington, D.C.; March 7, 1865. A signed document relating to the purchase and movement of products claimed from insurrectionary states, sold by "Samuel H. Jones and John Talbot of Missouri." The document reads in part: "...they will be able to bring such products within the National Military lines and sell and deliver them to Agents authorized to purchase for the United States under the Act of Congress of July 2nd 1864, and the Regulations of the Secretary of the Treasury...Officers of the Army and Navy and civil officers of the Government will observe this order and will give the said Jones and Talbot and their Agents and means of transportation and said products free and unmolested passage through the lines, other than blockaded lines, and safe-conduct within the lines while going for or returning with said products or while the said products are in store awaiting transportation for the purposes aforesaid." Signed just one month before the end of the Civil War and Lincoln's assassination.Early in the war, the Union established a blockade of Confederate ports designed to prevent the export of cotton and the transportation of weapons and supplies into the Confederacy. The blockade, although imperfect, was an important policy that slowly cut off Confederate access to weapons that the North could produce for itself. Goods seized could then be moved and traded by those with special licenses or passes from the U.S. Government.
Condition: Flattened folds, with separations starting at the edges of folds. Minor edge toning, along with soiling on verso. Boldly signed by Lincoln.
