Description

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed as President. One page, 5" x 4.5" (sight), on "Executive Mansion" letterhead, Washington, May 17, 1862. Written during the height of the Peninsular Campaign, where Union forces were launching a full-scale offensive whose object was to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond, this gracious note reads in full:

"Dear Madam, It affords me much pleasure herewith to give you my autograph which you ask for your friend [sic] Mrs. John Harper."

According to Roy Basler's Collected Works of Lincoln 1861-62, Volume 5, pages 220-221, on this date Lincoln was signing requests for autographs as he signed a comparable one to Miss Mary Motley.

The letter has been trimmed at the bottom and exquisitely matted and framed with a beautiful engraving by Currier & Ives of Lincoln used during the 1860 presidential campaign. The portrait itself is framed and measures 16" x 20" overall and is in superb condition with bright, like new colors. Also included in the framing are two commemorative medallions. Overall size is 27.5" x 37.5". A beautifully presented piece of Lincoln memorabilia.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
