Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed as President. One page, 7.5" x 9.75", endorsement penned on the verso of a January 24, 1862, letter sent to the President by Colonel E. M. Norton, the first U.S. Marshall of West Virginia. In his letter, Norton heaps great praise upon Col. A. W. Crothers, informing the President that Crothers "will be an applicant before you for some situation within your gift. No words of mine can do justice to my appreciation of his merit. His Actions, Patriotism, and untiring devotion to the public interests, together with his intelligence, entitle him to high consideration and to the gratitude of the Government. He has done all that a devoted patriot in his position could do to sustain the Government and to crush out this unholy rebellion."

Four days later, the president penned his endorsement on the verso of Norton's letter: "Respectfully submitted to the War Department, with the remark that I should be pleased for Mr. Crothers to be appointed Assistant Paymaster, if it can consistently be done. A. Lincoln. Jan. 29, 1862." Red ink handstamp on verso with red ink holograph notations. The letter is lightly age-toned and beautifully calligraphed by Norton. The president's somewhat lengthy endorsement on verso is very boldly penned, with a few minor ink smudges.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
