    Description

Abraham Lincoln. Autograph Document Signed twice "Wilmot & Lincoln p.d." No place, no date (Tazewell Co., Ill.; docketed April 1844). In Seaborn Moore vs John Davis, the defendant states that on trial he will "prove and set off against the claim of the plaintiff" two promissory notes, plus payment of two judgments against Moore on which Davis was security, and "the value of three hundred trees" furnished by Davis to Moore, totaling in all about $689. Lincoln writes that the promissory notes are being filed "and set up in defence in the case. And the defendant claims a judgment over against the plaintiff." Lincoln's colleague in this suit, William H. Wilmot, died the following year and Lincoln chaired the committee that, on behalf of members of the bar in adjoining counties, drew up sympathy resolutions. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
