    Description

Abraham Lincoln. Autograph Document Signed twice "Davis, Linder & Lincoln p.q." No place or date [Vermilion Co., Ill.; docketed October 1851], one and one-quarter pages, folio, on light blue paper. A choice document from William Fithian vs George W. Casseday, in which the plaintiff replies to the defendant's plea and sets out his main defense, namely that "at the time…a son of the said plaintiff, at a great distance, to wit at the distance of forty miles, from the place where the corpse of the plaintiff's wife then was being at the dwelling of her mother, & with her mother, brothers and sisters, was so sick, and for so long a time thereafter remained so sick, as to make it proper and necessary, that the plaintiff should, in order to attend his said sick son, leave the corpse of his said wife, and remain from it until after the funeral obsequies thereof were past…" Old glassine repairs to fold breaks at margins. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
