    Description

Abraham Lincoln Assassination Bloody Relic from the Peterson Boarding House. This is a 1" x .5" section of the blood-stained linen sheet that President Abraham Lincoln laid upon during his dying hours in the Petersen House, which lay across the road from Ford's Theatre. The president died in the Petersen house at 7:22 a.m. on April 15. Mounting remnants appear on the reverse.

Included is a color paper copy of a section of the original linen sheet. This color paper copy also includes a copied statement written by Charles K. Tuckerman (1821-1896): "Relic from the death bed of Abraham Lincoln, stained with his blood. Taken from his death chambers. [Signed] C. K. T." Tuckerman, a Massachusetts politician and diplomat, was in Washington at the time of the assassination, when he obtained the original larger sheet. After Tuckerman's death, the larger sheet and statement was found in Tuckerman's papers. Also included is a copy of a letter dated June 2, 1961, to Norm Flayderman of Antique Firearms from autograph dealer/expert Mary Benjamin stating that this piece is "a piece of the linen sheet taken from Lincoln's deathbed in the Petersen house. It came to me with the Charles K. Tuckerman papers."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
