Abraham Lincoln and Cabinet: Engraving and Autograph Display. 33 ½" x 24" [sight] engraving titled: "The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation Before the Cabinet From the Original Picture Painted at the White House in 1864." Engraved by A. H. Ritchie and published in 1866 after the painting by Francis Carpenter that currently hangs in the Capitol. The first version of this print was published by Derby & Jackson in 1864, based on a "sneak peak" of the artist's preliminary sketches. Carpenter later revised those sketches with this engraving accurately reflecting the final version. It apparently was very popular and issued for a period of years. The President paid for and ordered an artist's proof, but we do not know if delivery was ever made. Clipped signatures of all eight men in the print appear below in windows, along with custom caption cards indicating their name and title. The signers include: Edwin M. Stanton, Salmon P. Chase, Abraham Lincoln, Gideon Welles, William H. Seward, Caleb B. Smith, Montgomery Blair and Edward Bates. All signatures are clear and bold. There are two faint scratches on the print plus some light foxing in the central portion. It is an impressive piece. We are also selling the companion Jeff Davis display in this sale. Donald P. Dow designed the frame which was produced by Newcomb Macklin of Chicago.
