Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson signed endorsements - both as president - on one piece of paper

Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson Autograph Endorsements Signed, Both as President. One leaf, 3" x 5", [Washington, D.C.], March 10, 1865 (Lincoln) and May 9, 1865 (Johnson). Five weeks before his death, President Lincoln agrees in this endorsement to make the unspecified change requested but offers "Col. King" an "opportunity to offer a resignation." Twenty-four days after Lincoln's death, the new president, Andrew Johnson, adds his own endorsement under Lincoln's. The verso is ruled but otherwise blank. Toned with reinforced folds on the blank side. Minor stains and soiling.

President Lincoln's endorsement is written in pen and reads in full, "I have decided to make the change within asked for, but I wish Col. King to have a little time - a month or two if he chooses & an opportunity to offer a resignation if he prefers. [Signed] A. Lincoln March 10, 1865." Below Lincoln's endorsement, President Johnson endorses in pencil in full, "Let the appointment be made. May 9th 1865 [signed] Andrew Johnson."

"Col. King" could be Lt. Col. Adam E. King, an A. A. G. of Volunteers, who had been assigned to the 22nd Army Corps, Department of Washington, in January 1865. No record, however, of King's resignation could be found. Later in April 1866, President Johnson appointed Adam King a brigadier general by brevet, retroactive to March 13, 1865, three days after Lincoln's endorsement.
